PARASITOLOGIA DE ORGANISMOS ACUÁTICOS NATIVOS E INTRODUCIDOS (BIOLOGÍA, SISTEMÁTICA, BIOGEOGRAFÍA, Y SANIDAD ACUÍCOLA) Y PARASITOLOGÍA AMBIENTAL.
Semblanza
El Dr. Edgar Mendoza es Químico-Farmacéutico-Biólogo en su formación básica. Desde entonces su interés por la Parasitología la ha encaminado hacia modelos de estudio en la interacción parásito-hospedero en ambientes acuáticos silvestres de Centro y Sudamérica, Asia y México, culminando su doctorado en Ciencias Marinas. Su especialidad se basa en el estudio morfológico y molecular de parásitos metazoarios, especialmente monogeneos (Platelmintos) de importancia veterinaria que son altamente especificos hacia sus hospederos (principalmente peces dulceacuícolas y marinos tropicales). Utiliza los rasgos morfológicos y moleculares entre las especies de monogeneos para establecer sus relaciones filogenéticas entre y dentro de grupos y así mismo, comprender la genealogía y biogeografía de sus hospederos reconociendo posibles eventos de migración y/o introducción de animales exóticos hacia nuevas areas geográficas. Dado que muchas especies de monogeneos están catalogadas como precursoras de mortalidad de peces en sistemas de cultivo, resulta de interés científico para el Dr. Mendoza, además de identificar los monogeneos, determinar los parámetros de infección de estos parásitos en los organismos acuáticos para mejorar las condiciones de sanidad y llevar a buen término el manejo y cultivo de estos recursos pesqueros en ambientes controlados. El impacto hacia la sociedad del nuevo conocimiento generado de estas investigaciones se traduce en la formación de recursos humanos y el diagnostico parasitológico oportuno de los animales permite valorar la calidad y el manejo de los recursos pesqueros de la region.
